Superb resolution and a fixed aperture value across the entire zoom range

A lavish, 28 elements in 18 groups lens construction was adopted, including newly developed large-diameter EDA lenses and 4 Super ED lenses for excellent clarity across the entire zoom range, minimal color fringing and flares, and superb resolution to the edges of the image on a large-diameter lens with a fixed F4.5 aperture.

Coating technology, Z Coating Nano, significantly reduces ghosts and flares for sharp, clear image quality. By adding a layer of nano-sized particles with a layer of air in the center to the surface of the lens, the coating achieves a refractive index similar to that of air for reduced surface reflections.

Built-in teleconverter making 1000mm equivalent[1] super telephoto shooting possible

When using the built-in teleconverter that extends the focal length by 1.25x, you can enjoy 1000mm equivalent[1]/max. F5.6 super telephoto shooting. So that you never miss a shot, the built-in teleconverter can be quickly switched and locked without ever having to take your eye from the viewfinder. This lens is compatible with the optional Teleconverter MC-14/MC-20 that extends the focal length while keeping the high optical performance of the master lens. When combined with the 1.4x Teleconverter MC-14, you can shoot at a maximum 1400mm equivalent[1], and when combined with the 2x Teleconverter MC-20, you can shoot at a maximum 2000mm equivalent[1], for amazing super telephoto capabilities.

Amazing range of shooting from super telephoto to macro

Close-up shooting performance with a closest focusing distance of 1.3 m (entire zoom range) and a maximum image magnification of 0.57x[1] is now possible while utilizing the super-telephoto lens. A maximum image magnification of 0.71x[1] is possible while using the built-in teleconverter for authentic telemacro shooting. This allows you the chance for close-up photography of subjects that are normally difficult to get close to.

Increase maximum image magnification by attaching an Olympus teleconverter (sold separately). The teleconverter MC-14 allows you to shoot at a maximum image magnification of 1.01x[1] while the MC-20 increases magnification 1.43x[1].

A lightweight, compact, and large aperture super telephoto with excellent performance

Utilizing optimal materials such as magnesium alloy, carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and carbon fiber across the entire lens helps maintain strength and precision while keeping the design compact and lightweight at a length of 314.3 mm and weight of 1,875 g[2]. This model also employs an inner zoom system so the lens length remains the same across the entire zoom range, ensuring that the lens balance is always stable for shooting. A lightweight carbon fiber lens hood is used to ensure that the center of gravity of the lens does not shift toward the end when the lens hood is used.

Highly reliable dustproof, splashproof and freezeproof performance

This product is equipped with superb dustproof, splashproof and freezeproof (-10℃) performance. Pairing this lens with a dustproof, splashproof, and freezeproof camera body makes it possible to continue shooting in punishing environments such as rain and snow with peace of mind.

Heat-resistant coating to suppress rising temperatures

Since super telephoto zoom lenses require extremely precise control, the effects of heat cannot be ignored. To counter this issue, we adopted a heat-shielding coating that reflects infrared rays of sunlight with greater efficiency compared to a conventional black coating. Our coating provides excellent heat resistance, reducing internal temperature rise by about 10% and external temperature rise by about 30%. Controls for focusing on super telephoto shooting and control feel appropriate to a high-spec lens

This lens was designed to give you the ability to smoothly tune settings and functions as you shoot. It is equipped with a precise, rubberized zoom/focusing ring for fine control and has a focus memory function allowing you to set your favorite focal position instantly. Other function switches are laid out to let you focus on getting the shot.

Fast, high-precision AF across the entire zoom range

We have lightened the focusing lenses thanks to Olympus's proprietary high-precision lens thinning technology. This makes AF fast and highly precise across the entire zoom range. There is virtually no change in focusing speed even when using the built-in teleconverter.
